Deeply soothing and anointed is the vice that began its eminent journey at the age of 10. Minister Rhodell Lewis is the sum of a multi-faceted past. His participation as lead vocalist in the mass choir at the Church of Christ Holiness in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida where he played bass and drums, was only the beginning. Even at such a young age, his oratorical gifts were obvious, and both he and his voice matured simultaneously. Inspired by an English teacher, he pursued a career in broadcast journalism.
He attended Brossard Community College in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, as well as Miami University, where he majored in radio broadcast. In the early 80's, Lewis did some light broadcasting in Florida and Atlanta at WCLK, WTJH and WAOK. Shortly thereafter he focused on music performance. Influenced by the sounds of Commissioned, The Whininess, the Soul Stirrers and Timothy Wright, Lewis developed his own style.
In 1989, Lewis recorded a debut single on the Glory Records Label. The cuts were entitled, "Yes God Is Good" and "It's the Love of Jesus". That release boosted his professional career and he accumulated a local following and increasing polarity in gospel circles. His gift was recognized by A&M Records, which hired him as a Local Gospel Coordinator.
He became acquainted with major gospel artists. These artists were drawn to Lewis' raspy vocals. He has been compared to John P. Kee, and in recent years Lewis has done lead vocals with Kee at local concerts, as well as background or lead vocals with The Williams Brothers, Douglas Miller and Rev. Gerald Thompson.
Lewis now endeavors to take his vocal abilities to new professional levels. A brief stint with the Atlanta-based male group, CONCEPT, showcased Lewis' ability to carry a song while simultaneously building audience participation to a near frenzy!
It was during this time that Lewis developed his skills as a Gospel songwriter. While musically ministering around the city, he accepted God's call into the preaching/teaching ministry. Since yielding in obedience to the voice of God, musically and ministerially, he continues to climb higher heights.
He entered an early Kentucky Fried Chicken soloist competition. He has also received several awards and honors, including a 1988 Certificate of Merit from Mayor Andrew Young, a 1991 Service Award from DJ Esmond Patterson, and a 1992 honor form MITM Gospel Magazine for professional contributions.
Lewis is a pastor, as well as a music minister. He founded the True Life Christian Ministries in Atlanta, Georgia, and continues to sing God's praises in his own uncommon, energetic manner. It is evident that God is his first love. His deep pitch elevates the spirits of men, further displaying his desire to serve God to the highest.
Rhodell Lewis is a name soon to be spoken in the same vein as Alvin Slaughter and Ron Kenoly. Rhodell Lewis is a true leader of praise and worship. Nothing beats Lewis "live, " yet any way one can hear him, enjoyment is guaranteed.
